"today in the bay." >> an update to breaking news near atlanta where four children are dead after a duplex caught fire. the children ranged in age from 8 months to 7 years. we have learned a 6-year-old child survived with no serious injuries after his mother threw him from the second floor window to safety. the mother, however, was severely burned and is now recovering at an atlanta hospital. the children's grandmother managed to make it out of the home without injury. the cause of the devastating fire is under investigation. >> also new this morning, san francisco police now investigating an overnight shooting and stabbing in a neighborhood. the stabbing happened before 3:15 this morning on connecticut street. the victim was stabbed in the chest but is expected to survive. nobody so far is under arrest. almost two hours earlier police responded to a shooting down the street near connecticut and 25th. the victim was shot in the foot. he's now in the hospital. he is expected to survive. so far no suspects have been arrested. >> 6:04. maritime officials want regulations for ships mo

into a populated part of georgia at this time. here's atlanta. rome, georgia, right there. there is the circulation of this storm about to move over i-75 but not quite yet. let me show you why i am so concerned with this storm. there's the town right there. this is a signature of a tornado on the ground. this is wind coming and wind going and that circulation right through here is headed right into adaresville, georgia. we have watches all of the way from pittsburgh because we had wind damage there all of the way south to tornado warnings possible down to mobile, alabama. a widespread system. make sure you have your noaa weather radio on. buy the app for your phone that will warn you if the warning is where you are right now. very dangerous day today. we'll keep you advised. >> this is really surprising. did you say adaresville? >> yes. >> other places that could end up in the same predicament within the next few hours? >> a big squall line to the west. we call it a squall line because it's all lined up in a row. you typically don't get tornado warnings along a line of storms. when you get a couple

to miguel marquez, he's 60 miles north of atlanta. miguel, we saw the picture here of this tornado. tell me what you're seeing on the ground right now. >> a wide swath of damage through adairsville, it looks like, for the most part. there is a hotel that has been shredded by this storm. there is a plant that makes heavy machinery shredded by this tornado. there are several businesses along the adairsville highway, just off i-75 that have been damaged. there are power lines down throughout the area. trees are down, smashed into cars, trailers overturned, trailers damaged as well. we have seen a couple of neighborhoods where there is fairly significant damage to trailer homes. not clear where that person died, but it is not very far from where i am right now. it is still raining very hard here. the rain has been consistent. it has let up just a little bit. the other thing that is interesting, we left atlanta about 45 minutes ago, maybe an hour ago. the temperature was about 66 degrees there. it has dropped to 58 here. we're getting into the zone where the temperature changes and it is a dange

, sleet and black ice posing a threat from the mid south to the northeast. jennifer joins us from atlanta. >> you have the rain there, but we're still talking about freezing rain affecting the tennessee valley as well as the lower mississippi valley. the radar is lighting up with rain. you can see the wintry mix. as we zoom in for you, for areas like eastern tennessee as well as into kentucky, you'll be dealing with that wintry mix. we are seeing thing things clearing out to the west and down towards the south, including parts of alabama as well as into georgia, including atlanta. heavy rainfall some of these locations we're talking another one to two inches of rainfall. up to the north, snow is going to be the big story. we're already getting that report for areas like new york as well as into central parts of connecticut as well as into pennsylvania. as we help you time this out for you, for the ice storm warning, it will really come to an end about 6:00 a.m. central time for areas including parts of the lower mississippi valley. and for regions like pittsburgh as well as into parts of

the atlanta area. that could mean some travel delays for the big airport there. if we follow the front to north, we're looking at flood watches for a good part of the northeast, strong to severe thunderstorms possible this evening and tonight as that front approaches the coastline. on the opposite side of that, we're looking at cold air spilling into the midwest. the rain we saw yesterday in chicago is going to end as a little bit of light snow with temperatures in the upper 30s. very cold in the plains with highs in the teens and 20s. out west it looks pretty quiet especially in southern california. not bad, l.a. 65. look for rain in the northwest. seattle and portland kind of dreary and temperatures in the 40s. i'm david bernard for cbs news, miami. >>> overseas now, a police inspector says penny pinching may have caused that deadly nightclub fire in brazil. at least 234 people, mostly students, died in sunday morning's file. the inspector says the band used cheap outdoor flares for their pyrotechnic display instead of the much more expensive indoor flares. i

towards mississippi and even alabama, tornado watches are in effect until about 4:00 p.m., even in atlanta as a couple cells developed ahead of the squall lines. we'll watch the severe weather threat through the evening. the jet stream is slowly starting to lift off to the northeast but nonetheless this severe weather threat will stay with us straight through the evening hours. we'll look at severe weather from the mid-atlantic regions down through the southeast. this is not just going to be an event with isolated tornadoes. we have a lot of straight line winds out there, strong gusts, even 105-mile-per-hour wind reported east of nashville this morning and the flooding threat as we continue to see these heavy rains. >> indra petersons, thanks so much. >>> deer, antler spray, a banned substance? who knew. according to "sports illustrated" ray lewis not only knew but used the substance to heal faster. apparently there is a banned substance made from deer antlers that stimulates muscle growth. lewis tore his triceps in october, an injury so serious it could have ended his season. and snowing across parts of michigan and wisconsin. the biggest threat of severe weather is still from atlanta and southeast ward. that's where the tornado potentially is right now and maybe even up into the piedmont of north carolina and virginia. the big story is how all of this happened. atlanta, 70 degrees today, now down to 63, as miguel said. it is is cooling down. it's 10 degrees below zero in minot, north dakota. with windchill and heat index, it's even more sublime than that. topeka kansas has gone down 38 degrees where philadelphia was up. by this morning the cold air down in past the 24 hours and atlanta is getting cooler. st. louis is 34 degrees cooler than it was. part of the up and down of the jet stream is the energy between the cold and the warm. it is 80 and the feels like temperature in key west, it feels like 806789 the feels like wind temperature in minot is a negative 34. that's 114 degrees difference across the continental u.s., wolf. >> even here in the nation's capital, washington, d.c., was in the 20s and got in the 50s and 60s. it's going up and down. what's happening

of the hardest-hit spots was adairsville, georgia, 60 miles north of atlanta. one person there died as did a man in pntennessee. let's get right to miguel marquez. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning there, soledad. the person who died here in adairsville died fairly close to where we were standing right now. he was in a manufactured home and a tree killed him. this storm packed a thousand-mile punch. >> we could see circulation in the clouds. >> reporter: a reporter from atlanta affiliate wsb caught one twister as it touched down. >> slashing toward i-75. again, a tornado -- >> reporter: in its path, utter destruction. >> this is main street in adairsville, georgia. this is exactly where that tornado hit. you can see devastation on that side of the street, the trucks completely destroyed here. and on this side was a normal day of work here at the plant where they make parts for tractors. complete devastation. 50 to 100 people working here today, all of them fine. across this entire area, trucks, everythin everything, shredded. at the plant justin carnes and his fellow employees took

. sanjay gupta is in atlanta. what are you expecting to hear? >> elizabeth cohen has been working through the night on getting these numbers. one number, which is important and what we expected. widespread outbreak of the flu. 47 states, up from 41 states with an outbreak of the flu. some good news. the number of states with high levels of activity has gone down from 29 now to 24. two additional deaths in young people, from 18 to 20. but there may be some relief as you say in sight. we are at epidemic threshold. that basically means we are seeing more cases than we expected to see at this time year. big question? will those cases stay elevated or will they start to come down across the country? >> we keep hearing, get a flu shot, get a flu shot. some got our flu shots early. yes, i'm gloating. if you haven't gotten your flu shot yet, is there enough vaccine? >> i think so. i crunched some numbers on this overnight. may be some spot shortages, but general numbers, take aook at how many of these vaccines were specifically manufactured, 135 million, bottom number, 112 million vaccinated. not

in atlanta. so what do the numbers tell us, jonathan? >> reporter: well, jon, the latest numbers suggest this is shaping up to be a bad flu season particularly for the elderly. cdc officials tell fox news hospitalization rates for persons 65 years of age and older increased significantly over the past week, and there were nine pediatric deaths during that same time period, bringing total pediatric deaths, at least the official cdc count to 29. 48 states are now reporting widespread flu activity, up from 47 the previous week. while flu activity continues to decrease in some parts of the south, it continues to increase in other parts of the country, especially out west. based on what they have seen in previous years, cdc officials tell fox that we are probably about halfway through this flu season. jon? jon: and what about the vaccine supplies? >> yeah, although there are still reports of some individual practices, temporarily running out of flu shots, public health officials say there is plenty of vaccine to go around. vaccine manufacturers who originally planned on producing 135 million

temperatures. 63 in atlanta now. 63 in nashville. 39 in washington. the warmer temperatures headed in our direction. then you get out west and here comes the cold. they're talking about potential for freezing conditions all the way down into the los angeles basin, towards san diego, denver, they're concerned about the crops out there in the central valley california as temperatures overnight expected to be in the 20s for the next couple of mornings to the west. that's where all the cold will be this weekend. meanwhile, we'll be enjoying unseasonable warm as this high pressure allows a southerly push of air tonight and tomorrow. we're clouding up. you can see showers to the west. scattered showers in here later this afternoon. not going to rain all day, but a period of rain showers around i'd say starting 1:00, 2:00 today through the rush hour and winding down 9:00, 10:00 tonight. fog tonight. and for the weekend we'll warm up. upper 50s to near 60 tomorrow. partial sunshine in the afternoon. sunday the better of the two days temperature-wise. mid- to upper 60s. we'll cool it down by the m
